Marudhamalai Temple
Stationed nearly 12 km from the Central Railway Station of Coimbatore and approximately 15 km from the heart of the city, ‘Marudhamalai’, also spelled as ‘Maruthamalai’, is an auspicious shrine of tremendous religious stature. This temple of Marudhamalai is estimated to be more than 1200 years old. The ‘Lord Subramanya’, also worshipped by the appellation ‘Lord Muruga’ is seated in this auspicious temple. Here, Lord Muruga is bestowed upon the title ‘Dhandayuthapani’ which means, ‘the God of prosperity’. It is believed by the Devotees that the Lord Dhandayuthapani had performed here countless miracles in olden days.The Marudhamalai Temple of Lord Subramanya is specially admired for the two annual festivals organized here namely; Thaipoosam and Thirukarthigai. Thaipoosam is celebrated in the month of January and Thirukarthigai is celebrated in the month of February every year. The Marudhamalai Temple of Lord Muruga is perched at the headlands of the Western Ghats at the altitude of about 500 feet. The hill is christened as ‘Marudhamalai’ after the ‘Marutha’ trees which are found in bounty on its hill slopes. The term Marudhamalai can be split as Marudha and Malai, which means ‘the mountains covered by Marutha Trees’. The Marudhamalai hill is commended for its natural cultivation of Ayurvedic medicinal herbs.
The Devasthanam of Marudhamalai Temple has arranged a special bus service for the devotees that plies between the hill top and the foothills.

Perur Siva Temple
One of the foremost pilgrim destinations of Coimbatore, the ‘Perur Shiva Temple’ is embedded about 6 km to the west of Coimbatore city. Also revered by the name ‘Mel Chidambaram’, this auspicious shrine of Lord Shiva is considered to be amongst the 7 Kongu Siva temples. Surmised to be more than 1000 years old, the Perur Shiva temple, placed on the banks of the river Noyyal was constructed by a Chola King ; ‘Karikala Cholan’. Later, various kings of Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara dynasties contributed to the upgrading of this holy temple. The edifice that encircles the main structure of the temple was raised during the 17th century by the sovereigns of Madurai.As suggested by the name itself, The Perur Shiva Temple is dedicated to the God of destruction – Lord Shiva. A Swayambhu (self originated) Lingam of the patron deity is revered in the sanctum of this temple. The God worshipped in this temple is known by the name ‘Patteeswaras’. The Lord Patteeswaras is flanked by his consort ‘Pachai Nayaki’ who is seated beside him in this temple. The most peculiar feature of the Perur Shiva Temple which has made it renowned near and far is the celestial ‘Kanaka Sabha’. As denoted by the name, Kanaka Sabha means ‘the Golden Hall’. This golden hall houses a sublime statue of Lord Nataraja, which is plated in pure gold. The Lord Nataraja is depicted showering blessings on two of his ardent devotees Sage Gowmuni and Sage Pattimuni.
The grand avenue of the temple is guarded by the two life size statues of soldiers. Intricate carvings of the main hall and the pillars and the exquisite sculptures placed there amplify the grandeur of the entire framework. The Perur Shiva Temple is built in pure Dravidian order of architecture. It is strongly believed by the devotees that the mortal remains of human beings kept here turn into white stones after 144 years. Swarms of pilgrims alight here to pay homage both to the Lord Shiva as well as to their long dead ancestors.
Grounded on the banks of the river Noyyal, this temple complex also houses other three shrines namely; ‘Arasambalavanar temple’, ‘Pattivinayaga temple’ and ‘Kailasam temple’. Adjacent to the Perur Shiva Temple Complex, two sacred trees ‘Irava Panai’ (immortal plam) and ‘Pirava Puli’ (birth less tamarind) have been standing for years.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University
Located just 5 km from the Coimbatore Railway Station, the ‘Tamil Nadu Agriculture University’ is treasured as one of the premier Agriculture Universities and Research Institutes of South Asia. Officially registered as a University and a Research Center on 1st June, 1971, this institute is reckoned to be the 16th Indian Farm University. The origins of Tamil Nadu Agriculture University can be sourced from a place named Saidapet in Chennai.A distinct feature of this university that appeals the horticulturists as well as the nature lovers is the outstanding botanical garden housed here. Rich in its collection of variety of plants and tress, this botanical garden is also noteworthy for its affluent floral breeds. Sprawling over an extensive area of about 300 hectares, the botanical garden as well as the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University comprise one of the must visit tourist’s attractions of Coimbatore.

VOC Park
VOC Park, an archetype of fun personified and the dreamland came true is a not to miss amusement center in Coimbatore. Christened in the honor of the legendary freedom fighter of south; Mr. V. O. Forest College
The Forest College of Coimbatore, regarded to be one of the oldest educational institutes of the country is situated about 3.5 kilometers from the Coimbatore Railway Station. This residential college offers a two year degree program in forestry and the students who pass out from here are directly posted as rangers in the forest department of state government. Gradually they are promoted as DFO (Divisional Forest Officer) and later as Conservator. The museum established by the Forest College of Coimbatore is regarded to be one of the major attractions of this city. Noteworthy for its expansive collection of rocks, minerals, insects, pests, fungus, snakes and so on, a visit to this museum is very entertaining and at the same time extremely educating.
Bhavani Sagar Dam
Constituted in the post independence period, the ‘Bhavani Sagar Dam’ is acknowledged to be one of the largest and hugest earthen dams of the country. Stationed approximately 80 km from the city Coimbatore, this massive reservoir is constructed over the Bhavani River. The dam is named ‘Bhavani Sagar’ after the very rive Bhavani. The Bhavani Sagar Dam is located about 16 km from Satyamangalam and 36 km from Mettuppalayam of Tamil Nadu. A wonderfully preserved garden specially designed and engineered for kids is perched in the proximity of the Bhavani Sagar Dam. Children really love spending time and rejoicing in this park.The Bhavani village, situated about 121 km from Coimbatore is the very locale where the two revered rivers of south the Cauvery River and the Bhavani River converge. This confluence point of these two rivers is adorned as a holy ‘Sangama’ place. Glorified as the ‘Triveni of South’, Bhavani is sacred pilgrim vicinity that boasts of an important religious heritage. Hailed for the ‘Sangameshwarer Temple’ positioned here, Bhavani Village draws a number of visitors and pilgrims all round the year. Bhavani Village also served as the central office of a British Collector Willizim Garrow. Willizim Garrow was a devotee of both Lord Sangameshwar and Goddess Vedanayaki seated in the Sangameshwarer Temple.
Ayyappan temple
Located in New Siddhapudur along the Sree Ayyappan road in Coimbatore, this temple is revered as an extremely sacred religious seat of the city. Constructed by the Sri Dharma Sastha Baktha Jana Sabha in the year 1976, this magnanimous temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa is fashioned after the popular Ayyappan Temple at Sabarimala. All the religious ceremonies performed here, the ‘Poojas’ offered here and the practices followed in this temple of Lord Ayyappa are exactly in the likeness of those performed at Sabarimala Temple.This Ayyappan Temple is open for the Darshana from 5 in the early morning to 9 in the night. Daily Poojas performed in this temple are the Morning Pooja and the Evening Pooja. Moreover, special Poojas are offered during the holy Ayyappan Season. At the time of the Ayyappan Season, the Ayyappan Temple of Coimbatore is specially thronged by the devotees who want to seek the blessings of Lord Ayyappa.
Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple
Perched at the foothills of the popular Velliangiri hills in Coimbatore city, the Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple is widely reckoned both for its mastery of architecture and serenity of ambiance. The atmosphere here is extremely peaceful, composed and full of positive energy. One can sit here for hours and meditate. The moment you enter the soothing premises of the temple, the entire stress of your body is released and both your mind and soul experience through relaxation. The calm and pleasing natural surroundings contribute to creating the refreshing impact.Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple is held in much esteem as a foremost religious hub of Coimbatore. The extraordinary feature of this temple is the gigantic mercury Shiva Lingam placed in the sanctum of this temple. Countless names of saints and siddhas who had performed severe penance at this center are eternally connected with this temple. Embellished with glossy granite, this temple was constructed with bricks, sand, lime, mud and mortar.
An exclusive feature of this construction is that some herbal additives were also added to the mortar that helped in multiplying the tranquil effect of the surroundings. As per the legend associated with the background of this temple, it took around 2000 years for the construction of this edifice. The Dhyanalinga Yogic Temple is open from 6 in the morning to 8 in the evening for the visitors.

The Siruvani falls and dam
Located about 40 km to the west of Coimbatore, the famous Siruvani Falls and Dam is the pride of the Coimbatore District. Acclaimed as the second tastiest water in the world after Nile, Siruvani Water flows through the Anamalai ranges of Western Ghats. Siruvani Falls and Dam suffices as the major source of water for entire Coimbatore district. This dam is interconnected with seven rivers named Parambikulam, Aliyar, Sholiyar, Nirar, Palar, Thekadi and Thunakadavu through well laid canals and tunnels. The basic objectives fulfilled by them are power generation and irrigation. Profound with photographic natural surroundings and abundance of tasty water, this dam is considered to be one of the best examples of master engineering.
Thirumoorthi Dam
Thirumoorthi Dam, located 20 km from Udumalpet on Coimbatore – Palani highway adjoining the Thirumoorthi Hills is much acclaimed for the scenic beauty of its natural surroundings. Thirumoorthi Dam is an outstanding example of master engineering. Along with Siruvani Dam, Thirumoorthi Dam provides water supply to Coimbatore district. Moreover, it also generates electricity and serves the irrigation purposes. Just next to the dam is positioned the famous Thirumoorthi temple. A natural stream flowing from here and cascading waterfalls add to the grandeur of this place.
Velliangiri Hill Temple
Velliangiri or Vellingiri Hill Temple, located about 40 km from the Coimbatore city is one of the most sought after and much venerated pilgrim destinations of south. Perched at the elevation of 6000 feet above the sea level, the Velliangiri Hill Temple worships the Lord Shiva as the presiding deity. Apart from the religious importance associated with this place, the Vellingiri Hills are also exalted for their affluent natural resources. Extremely rare herbs used for medication naturally grow in the jungles that envelope the Vellingiri Hills. The enchanting panorama of the lush green mountains appeals the adventure enthusiasts to trek all the way up to the temple afoot.
Anubhavi Subramaniar Temple
Your trip to Coimbatore is not fulfilled unless and until you pay homage at the feet of the Lord Anubhavi Subramania. Notable for its spiritual and miraculous qualities, Anubhavi Subramaniar Temple beckons both ardent devotees as well as curious tourists. The temple is extremely popular all over the map for the natural water flow that is constantly oozing all round the year. Also revered by the title Chinna Thadagam, the way to Anubhavi Subramaniar Temple is not very easy to access. More than 100 boisterous steps need to be climbed before you alight at the feet of the Lord Subramania.There is no substitute way to reach the temple and the path that leads to the doors of Lord Subramania is not motorable. It is believed by the natives that the God seated in the sanctum of this temple will fulfill all your wishes. Another divine temple situated at the footing of the same hill is known as Lalithambikai temple. Tourists generally visit both the temples on the same day. Wild elephants are sighted here quite frequently and it is not at all advisable to visit the Anubhavi Subramaniar Temple after evening.

Eachanari Vinayagar Temple
Acclaimed as a very important pilgrim destination of Coimbatore, the Eachanari Vinayagar Temple is one of the oldest religious shrines of the city. Established in 1500 AD, this temple is dedicated to the Lord Vinayagar. Lord Vinayagar means Lord Vinayaka i.e. Lord Ganesha. The sanctorum of this temple houses a 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide idol of Lord Vinayagar.The ‘Moolavar’ of this temple was actually designed for the famous Perur Shiva Temple of Coimbatore. But when it was being carried from Madurai to Coimbatore, at this place due to some mysterious reasons the Moolavar got spanked. So it could not be taken to Perur Temple but instead kept at the same spot. Devotees of Lord Ganesha believe that the Lord Vinayagar himself had chosen Eachanari as his abode and from that time onwards Eachanari became a sacred pilgrim place. This temple is renowned for its Kumbabishekam. The latest one was organized in the year 1990.
Avanashi Temple
Situated 40 km from the Coimbatore city, Avanashi temple comprises one of the most important religious destinations of the whole Coimbatore district. Acclaimed as ‘Banaras of the South’, Avanashi is renowned for the Avanashilingeswarar temple set up here. Avanashilingeswarar temple is the biggest temple of Coimbatore. This temple was constructed by the Kings of Chola dynasty far back in 12th century AD. The sculptures of this temple are gracefully shaped and the carvings are minutely engraved.
Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, situated near Pollachi in Anamalai ranges of Western Ghat is placed approximately 90 km from the city Coimbatore. This famous wildlife sanctuary of Southern India is named after the first and only as yet Lady Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Nestled at the altitude of about 1400 meters above the sea level and covering an extensive area of over 958 sq. km., this wildlife sanctuary houses a wide range of exotic species of birds and animals. Wild animals sighted in this reservoir include tiger, elephant, panther, gaur, deer, sloth bear, wild bear, jackal, wild dog, pangolin, porcupine, civet cat, flying squirrel and many others. Birds like re-whiskered bulbul, rocket-tailed drongo, black-headed oriole, spotted dove, tree pie, green pigeon and many more find secured dwelling in this wildlife sanctuary. Birds and animals are seen residing happily and moving about freely in their natural habitat.The Amaravathy reservoir of Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is very popular for crocodiles. The beautiful Anaikunthi shoal, Karainshola, grass hills, teak forests, groves, reservoirs and waterfalls that decorate the sanctuary present the extravagance of nature. The best time to pay a visit to Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is from May to June and October to February. The tourists can book the ticket from ‘Topslip’ for entering the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary. There are two options available here. One is the elephant ride and the other is the van safari. They carry you inside the sanctuary and you can enjoy the animal sighting to the fullest. To reach the Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary you will have to board a bus to Pollachi from Coimbatore. From Pollachi rental vans or sanctuary buses can be availed. The tourists are advised to wear dull colored clothes so that they will serve as a good camouflage in the wilderness.
